EXPERIENCE A TRADITIONAL BALINESE CEREMONY
A traditional Balinese ceremony with sacred water in the temples is a deeply rooted ritual in the culture and spirituality of Bali. These ceremonies take place regularly in the island's temples to honor the gods and appease the spirits. During these rituals, priests and worshippers purify the space and participants using sacred water, often sourced from natural springs or special reservoirs within the temple.
The ceremony begins with prayers and offerings, after which participants gather around basins filled with sacred water. The priest then guides worshippers through a series of symbolic gestures, encouraging them to spiritually cleanse themselves by washing their hands, face, and sometimes even pouring water over their heads.
Each gesture and every drop of water holds profound significance, representing the purification of the soul and connection with the deities. Participants often express their devotion and gratitude to the gods throughout the ceremony, fostering a sense of community and spiritual peace within the temple.
On the island of Bali, it is said that the energy flowing there is so powerful that those who do not participate in this ceremony risk being overwhelmed by its forces. This can lead to undesirable effects on the body and mind, such as depression, sadness, stress, or even addictions. Local residents assert that a journey to Bali is incomplete until this ceremony has been performed. It serves as a means for visitors to fully connect with the island's spiritual essence and harmonize their being with its vibrant energy.
I experienced the ceremony with Priest Abibuddha in the Ubud region (a 30-minute scooter ride away). I found the ceremony to be magical and deeply meaningful. The offering materials cost around 300k, and his services are donation-based. Here is his contact: +62 877 6279 5144.
EXPERIENCE A SILENT RETREAT
Diving into a silent retreat can seem mysterious, even intimidating. The fear of the unknown, of solitude, sometimes holds us back. Yet, the desire to explore this unique experience has always driven me. Until I discovered the Bali Silent Retreat, a haven of peace in the heart of the island, where I invite you to share my journey.
From the moment I arrived, the center embraced me with a vision worthy of paradise. A sanctuary of nature, amidst rice fields, majestic trees, and vibrant flowers, where only the murmur of nature marked the moments. Every corner, from the movement shala to the swing in the medicinal plant garden, revealed a unique charm. With the sole rule of absolute silence, this retreat promised total immersion in the harmony of the present moment.
The cuisine at the Bali Silent Retreat, a true delight for the taste buds, reflected the artisanal expertise of the place. The vegetables and fruits, carefully cultivated in their fields using sustainable and circular farming practices, offered bursts of freshness and authentic flavors in every meal. Each dish, entirely homemade and predominantly vegan, provided an impressive variety of choices, enriching the culinary experience. The fresh herbs and aromatic plants available for our infusions, accompanied by a guide detailing their benefits, added an extra touch of well-being. Lastly, the fruit bar and homemade snacks were a source of indulgence at any time of the day.
Immersing myself in silence proved to be a liberation, an escape from social pressures and daily demands. Freed from the need to perform, to constantly give my energy, I found myself simply being: sleeping, eating, reading, moving my body, and contemplating nature. A welcome pause from the frantic pace of the outside world. Emotions and thoughts arose, as they often do in such experiences, paving the way for deep introspection. Questioning our desires, values, aspirations, welcoming these thoughts with kindness, seeing them as opportunities for growth and fulfillment.
This retreat was both a total break and a moment of expansion for me. A perfect introduction to silent retreats, where the freedom to read, write, and wander remains, unlike more intense experiences like Vipassana. I would recommend starting with this intermediate level before diving into a more rigorous one.
For those longing to live this unique experience, I invite you to step through the doors of the Bali Silent Retreat with eyes closed, ready to embrace each moment with gratitude and to be carried away by this unforgettable inner journey.
GO TO THE YOGA BARN Bali is renowned as a hub for yoga and spiritual practices, and the offerings on the island are indeed impressive! In every town, numerous yoga studios offer a diverse range of classes tailored to all practitioners. Among them, one center particularly captured my attention: The Yoga Barn in Ubud. Despite my initial apprehensions about its potentially "touristy" or "Instagrammable" aspect, I ultimately spent two full weeks exploring its various facets.
Nestled amidst nature, The Yoga Barn boasts a stunning setting, entirely constructed from wood and featuring several spacious studios. The variety of classes offered is simply breathtaking, with around twenty daily sessions covering an impressive range of practices: from yoga in all its forms to breathwork, dance, vocal exercises, meditation, chakra realignment, nutrition, and even reiki. Additionally, the center regularly hosts a diverse array of events.
What struck me particularly was the impeccable quality of teaching. The teachers, professional and caring, deliver thoughtful, structured, and varied classes. Moreover, the center's policy prohibiting the use of phones during classes helps eliminate any sense of performance or image, providing a more authentic experience.
I highly recommend spending a few days at The Yoga Barn and exploring the various classes offered, especially the yoga sessions and the active meditation class led by an Indian guru. This unique experience will allow you to delve into the depths of your soul and release buried emotions, paving the way for profound inner transformation.
Immersing yourself in spirituality in Bali is a captivating experience that leaves a deep imprint on our hearts and minds. Whether through yoga, meditation, traditional ceremonies, or inspiring encounters, the Island of the Gods offers fertile ground to nourish our souls and awaken our consciousness.
